REMAINING ARTIST PROOFS
Prints made by Kern personally to use as reference when considering the image for a Limited Edition, or to give to his Art Printer as a guide. They were printed with pigment ink on museum paper.
Kern's Artist Proofs were generally printed on 17"x22" paper or smaller and a small number made, usually from 1-5 copies. Kern stopped making his own Artist Proofs in 2023 when he closed his studio.
All Limited Edition prints once had a corresponding Artist Proof but most were discarded until Kern stated saving them. Not every Artist Proof became a Limited Edition series, most did not. The following is an inventory of Kern's remaining Artist Proof prints.
EDITION PRINTS
Kern began making Edition Prints upon his first solo exhibit at Fahey-Klein Gallery Los Angeles in 2010.
Edition prints are generally 20x24 or 3x40in size with a limit of 25 prints in perpetuity. Kern is not authorizing the making of Limited Edition prints when he is no longer able.
Edition prints are not all printed at once, but on demand. Thus a print marked 3/25 which is never printed again makes the edition in reality and edition of 3, not 25. Each print is signed and notated verso by Kern.
Existing editions are listed here as they appeared in exhibits. All of these editions are still in progress.
