Kern photographed his own ideas for magazine editorials and advertising campaigns. In order to do this he sketched his ideas and submitted them to his clients for approval. Once approved he used the sketches as layouts while shooting.
He once said his most favorite time of an assignment was sitting at his counter staring at a blank sheet of paper.
